Thining hair

I've always had a big thick head of hair.......I call it my lions mane.  For the last few months I'm noticing more and more hair coming out when I comb it in the morning.  It's starting to look a little thinner to me.

Has anyone else experienced this?
I'm not sure if it is just part of aging or if it could be because I had plastic surgery in Nov 2008 and then again in March 2009.........
Know of any good products to strengthen the hair or stop it from breaking/falling??

Thanks
Ruth

When you have any major operation you can have thinning hair and you have had two in a years time.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Good morning Moosie

Yep, 33 years this month!

Okay, the very first thing I as my clients who are experiencing thinning hair is about heredity. Did your mom, or her side of the family have a full head of hair in their later years? IF this is the case, it is heredtary and there is little to be done. This has been confirmed to me by a MD who specializes in hair restoration.

Next, I ask about diet. Are you getting enough protein?  Then, the next question is "have you had any general anesthesia in the last 3 months?"  Most medications can be found in the hair shaft upon chemical analysis. It's one of the ways police officers determine drug use (it's what my husband does). Are you taking B complex or Biotin? An increase in protein and B-5(biotin) can help.

Then, I move on to thyroid. Low thyroid will sometimes  exhibit itself in your hair making the texture become "cob-webby", as well as thinning. You might have it checked.

As far as what to do, so much of what I would tell you to do depends on the answers to the above questions. Take a goooooood look at your scalp and hair in the mirror. Is you hair breaking off?  If it is, there will be stubble where it broke. If it's falling out, the new hair that is replacing it will be soft, not stubbley. If THAT's the case, it is systemic, meaning not something you are doing to it while styling, shampooing, etc. New hair that is replacing old is fragile and needs strengtening. I'd suggest you go to a reputable salon and ask for a shampoo and conditioner for fragile hair. The conditioner will help strengthen, the shampoo is gentle on that new hair.

Well, obviously I could go on and on but I'd probably bore you to death. Let me know if you need anymore info

Hi Susan,

Mom has always and still has a thick head of hair.  Dad's has thinned out.  My mom's mom also had a very full head of hair....

Diet, I get between 80 - 100 grms protein daily.

I've had 2 surgeries under general anesthesia within a 4 month time frame (Nov 2008, March 2009)

I have not been good with taking my additional B complex (I used to be so good with it), I basically take a multi vit that's it..  I'll try to find some B-5.

My thyroid was recently checked....no issues.

I don't see any stubble on the scalp but I don't see any new growth either.......maybe my eyes are failing too...LOL

I happen to have a Dr's appt and will mention to him.  I'm hoping it's the anesthesia connection.  The scary thing about that is I'm having another surgery in about 5 weeks which can make it even worse.

I'll also look for a shampoo and conditioner that might help.

Thanks for all the GREAT info......you did not bore me, I found it interesting!!

I'm sorry I didn't look at those dates better, speaking of eye issues!  Yes, I would guess the anesthesia could be the culprit. I've had (I know, it's unbelievable) 16 surgeries, with #17 coming up next week and my hair always suffers. But, it's usually just very dry.

Different people, different reactions, I guess. I think you'll just need to ride it out. Get some good products and be more diligent about your supplements. I'd be in 6 months time you'll see a big difference.

Thanks a bunch Susan!!

Holy cow....16 surgeries.......I'm hoping that was spread out over a whole lot of years.  My SO (significant other), Matthew,  is always teasing me.......He swears I've had more surgeries than anyone else....I think my total is 9 or 10.

Best wishes to you on your upcoming 17th.  When is it?

Four months after a major surgery of any length, you will notice some thinning - according to my stylist.  I lost a whole lot with my weight loss back in 2006.  The thinning associated with plastic surgery is a whole lot less than with massive weight loss.  Today, even after six surgeries in three years, my hair is thicker than ever - and curly - something I hadn't planned on......
